What is the periodic table?

The periodic table of elements (PSE) is a table in which all chemical elements are arranged. It was developed by the chemists Mayer and Mendeleev.

In the periodic table, elements are arranged by increasing atomic number (number of protons in the atomic nucleus). Elements with similar chemical properties are in the same column (group).

The colors in the interactive periodic table (on the separate page) indicate the different element groups:

  • β–  Nonmetals
  • β–  Noble gases
  • β–  Alkali metals
  • β–  Alkaline earth metals
  • β–  Metals and metalloids
