Volcano Experiment

Make your own volcano eruption at home!

About the experiment:

This classic science experiment is fun, simple, and educational! Build a model volcano and watch it 'erupt' using safe household ingredients. It's a great way to learn about chemical reactions and geological processes.

Required materials:

  • Small plastic bottle (e.g., from water or juice)
  • Sand, soil, or clay to shape the volcano around the bottle
  • Tray or large bowl to catch the 'lava'
  • Warm water
  • Liquid dish soap (a few drops)
  • Food coloring (red or orange, optional)
  • Baking soda (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Vinegar (about 1/2 cup)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Place the bottle upright in the center of the tray.
  2. Shape sand, soil, or clay around the bottle to form a volcano shape. Leave the bottle opening free.
  3. Pour warm water into the bottle (about halfway).
  4. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap and food coloring (if using). Stir.
  5. Add the baking soda to the bottle.
  6. Get ready for the eruption! Quickly pour the vinegar into the bottle and step back.
  7. Watch your volcano erupt!

The science behind it:

When you mix baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid), a chemical reaction occurs. This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas (CO2). The gas creates bubbles, and the dish soap helps make those bubbles foamier, creating the effect of 'lava' flowing from the volcano.

Safety notes:

Wichtig: This experiment should be conducted under adult supervision. Although the ingredients are safe, be careful not to get the mixture in your eyes. It's best to work outdoors or on an easily washable surface.
