Promoting Creativity: More than Just Painting and Crafting

Published on: May 1, 2025

What is Creativity Actually?

Creativity goes far beyond artistic activities like painting or crafting. It's the ability to develop original ideas, solve problems in new and unconventional ways, and imaginatively develop existing things. This ability is of great importance in all areas of life, whether in school, later professional life, or in dealing with everyday challenges.

How Can Parents Promote Creativity?

The good news: Every child is naturally creative! Parents can nurture and further develop this innate ability by providing the right environment and stimulation:

  • Leave free space: Give your child time and space for free play and their own ideas, without constant instruction or evaluation.
  • Offer diverse materials: Not just pens and paper, but also natural materials, everyday objects, cardboard boxes, fabric scraps, etc. stimulate imagination.
  • Process orientation instead of result orientation: The journey is the destination. Praise the effort and ideas, not just the finished "product".
  • Support curiosity: Answer questions patiently and encourage your child to question things and find their own answers.
  • Allow mistakes: Creativity needs experimental joy. Mistakes are learning opportunities.
  • Be a role model: Show creative solutions in everyday life yourself.

Role playing, inventing stories, building with various objects, or making music are also great ways to stimulate and develop creativity.
